Doctor Who?

My nephew is a Whovian. He has suggested, more than once, that I should catch up with the revived series. I watched Tom Baker as The Doctor when I was a kid. It was on before Saturday morning cartoons so why not? It was quirky and British and fun and I didn’t really think about it again until my nephew started watching the new Series a few years ago.

This summer, when it was announced that the future was indeed female and Jodie Whittaker would become the 13th Doctor, I decided it was time to take my nephew’s advice.

It’s kind of hard to pick up where I left off as a kid with the old show, so I just started with the ninth doctor and the revived series. It took a while to get back into it – tardis, daleks, cybermen – but I did like the show and The Doctor.  And by the time I fell in love with him, Christopher Eccleston was gone.

David Tennant as The Doctor
Az watching his favorite Doctor.

Let me preface this by saying that I LOVE David Tennant. I had just come off of watching season 3 of Broadchurch so all the “feels” were still fresh. It didn’t take much for me to fall in love with the tenth doctor. To say I binged the Tennant episodes is an understatement. Rose, Martha, Donna, River (MY GOD, RIVER!!!)… I watched them all in a matter of days. I ugly cried for so many of those episodes. My cat, Az, even got into Tennant’s Doctor. He plopped himself down in front of the iPad so as not to miss a frame. The tenth doctor’s regeneration was a very emotional one. It took a lot out of me and I had to take a break for a few days before I started the Matt Smith episodes.

Now, I don’t hate Matt Smith, but it just seems to me that everyone else around him – Amy, Rory (LOVE!!), River (MY GOD, RIVER!!!), Clara/Oswin, Victorian Lizard Lady, Craig, the colorful daleks – are all more interesting. The eleventh doctor seems too goofy. He keeps pointing out that he has 2 hearts, but he doesn’t quite show his hearts as much as previous doctors. He just never grew on me. Az kinda gave up at this point. Smith’s Doctor has some great speeches, though. (For those of you keeping score – Smith is my nephew’s favorite Doctor.)

So right now I’m about to watch the 50th Anniversary Special. And then I’ll transition to Peter Capaldi. I don’t know how I’ll feel about the twelfth doctor, but I do know this… When I’m done, I’m definitely going back to watch those Tennant episodes again.

“Donna Noble has been saved.”
